ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY CENTRE

The Tamale Teaching Hospital's Accident and Emergency Centre (i.e., Emergency Department) receives all trauma, medical, and surgical emergencies. The department provides emergency services 24 hours a day and receives both referred and unreferred cases from within the Norther sector, parts of Oti region as well as from neighboring countries in the sub region. It is the primary point of entry for in-patient admissions to other departments such as Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Therapeutics.

Core Functions

Service

The Emergency Department provides surgical, trauma, and medical services to patients admitted to the emergency unit. Other emergency care includes resuscitation and stabilization.

Training

The department conduct training on the management of emergencies, among others.

Research

The department is rich in clinical data, which is essential for research. Data can now be easily obtained with the advent of electronic medical records-LHIMS.

Clinical Areas

There are clinical areas in the Accident and Emergency Centre. The triage area, casualty/trauma area, examination room/holding bay, pharmacy, and four wards (red, yellow, and orange). Patients seen in the emergency department are initially managed and stabilized by staffs in the emergency department. Based on their diagnosis, patients are then assigned to various specialties such as internal medicine, surgery and its subspecialties, orthopedics, and plastic surgery. The patients are then managed by the various specialties and transferred to their respective wards for further care.
