Tamale Teaching Hospital is the largest medical facility in the Northern part of Ghana. Yearly, the hospital provides healthcare for more than 100,000 outpatients and admits just under 10,000.

The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) is comprised of 20 wards, 12 clinics, a treatment centre and a  Physiotherapy Centre among others. Established as a Regional Hospital in 1974, in less than 20 years, the Minister of Health upgraded it to a Teaching Hospital. The transformation from a Regional to a Teaching Hospital is directly connected to the inception of the School of Medical Sciences at the University for Development Studies Medical school to provide medical, nursing and public health students with quality medical education at the hospital. The hospital has established strong ties with international volunteer medical groups.

Notably among them include, Japanese medical experts that helped the hospital update it Renal and Dialysis Unit. Also, annually, Operation Smile, an international NGO from the United States, spends a week performing cleft lip and palate surgeries. Presently, the Apollo Hospital Network from India has agreed to provide training and continuing education opportunities for the medical and administrative staff.

Over the years, TTH’s Individual Attachment Program which has attracted a steady stream of international students pursuing careers in medicine, nursing and public health.
