The Accident and Emergency Department of Tamale Teaching Hospital, in collaboration with the Church of Pentecost, Dabokpa District in the Tamale Area, successfully organized a Basic Life Support (BLS) and Heimlich Manoeuvre Training on Saturday, June 20, 2026. This essence of the training is to strengthen emergency response capacity within the community.
The training brought together 63 participants, comprising 48 members of the Church of Pentecost and 15 representatives from the Dabokpa Traditional Area, including the chief and his council of elders.
Designed to build life-saving
capacity at the community level, the programme equipped participants with the
knowledge and practical skills needed to recognise and respond promptly to
cardiac arrest and choking emergencies. Through hands-on demonstrations and
practical sessions, participants gained confidence in delivering immediate care
before professional medical assistance arrives.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Mr. Ibrahim Salifu Lusume, Principal Nursing Officer at the Accident & Emergency Department, emphasised that empowering ordinary citizens with basic life support skills can significantly improve survival outcomes during medical emergencies by ensuring timely intervention.
The training forms part of the department's broader vision to expand access to basic life support education across communities, fostering a culture of responsible bystander intervention and developing a network of competent community first responders capable of saving lives.
The collaboration between the A&E Department and the Church of Pentecost underscores the vital role that partnerships between healthcare professionals, faith-based organisations, and traditional authorities can play in promoting public health, enhancing emergency preparedness, and building more resilient communities.
