The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), in partnership with TEK-iMAS Medikal, is set to support the expansion of dialysis services at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), in a move expected to improve access to renal care for patients in northern Ghana.
The initiative was disclosed during a fact-finding tour to assess the feasibility of partnering with TTH to construct a dialysis centre. The meeting was between management of TTH, TEK-iMAS Medikal and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund following a joint visit by the two organisations to explore prospects for a partnership with the hospital to expand its dialysis services, equipment base, infrastructure and overall service delivery for patients with renal conditions.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of the Governing Board of TTH, Dr. Simon Naporo, Prof. Baba Sulemana Mohammed said the hospital had unique opportunities to develop critical clinical areas to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare.
He welcomed the proposed partnership with TEK-iMAS Medikal and noted that TTH serves a population of more than seven million people across eight regions of Ghana. He further indicated that the hospital was also witnessing an increasing number of patients from neighbouring countries, including Togo, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Niger.
According to Prof. Baba, TTH was rapidly transforming into a hub for health tourism, making it necessary for government and private-sector stakeholders to leverage their resources and investments to adequately equip the hospital to meet the growing expectations of its clientele.
He further proposed the development of partnerships in other specialised areas, including urology, oncology and advanced imaging. He noted that these services were urgently needed, as patients often had to travel long distances to access them whenever the services were unavailable at TTH due to operational challenges or equipment downtime.
The Chairman of the Board of TEK-iMAS Medikal, Mr. Ahmet Kamil Salahoglu, said the organisation's support would go beyond the establishment of a dialysis centre to include capacity building for local healthcare professionals.
He said the initiative would contribute to strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers to provide quality renal care and ensure the sustainability of the services.
The Director of Medical Affairs of TTH, Prof. Alhassan Abdul-Mumin, who represented the Chief Executive Officer, expressed appreciation to TEK-iMAS Medikal and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for their visit and interest in supporting the hospital.
He underscored the importance of the proposed partnership and assured the delegation of management's commitment to ensuring its successful implementation.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was represented by its Policy Advisor on Health, Dr. Norbert Kipo, and the Northern Regional Coordinator, Mr. Isaac Konlan.
Dr. Kipo said the GMTF was working closely with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to identify services that were not currently covered under the NHIS benefits package, with the aim of having the Fund absorb the cost of such services.
He expressed optimism that the GMTF and its partners would develop a comprehensive tariff covering various non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the range of services to be supported by the Fund.
Dr. Kipo assured the meeting that the Fund had identified existing funding gaps and remained committed to addressing them to improve access to essential healthcare services.
The proposed partnership is expected to strengthen renal care services at Tamale Teaching Hospital, expand access to specialised treatment and reduce the need for patients in northern Ghana to travel long distances to seek dialysis and other specialised renal services.
