Management of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), led by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. (Med.) Abubakari Bawah Abdulai, has undertaken a number of interventions aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing infrastructure across the hospital.
Addressing staff at a durbar held on 30 September 2026, Dr. Bawah Abdulai announced that management had successfully extended oxygen piping to all beds at the Accident and Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Dialysis Unit, operating theatres, and other critical clinical areas within the facility, significantly improving access to lifesaving oxygen therapy.
The Chief Executive Officer also outlined notable improvements that have been achieved under the hospital's transformation agenda. These include:
· Provision of additional hospital beds to improve patient accommodation and care.
· Rehabilitation of critical medical equipment, including ventilators, anaesthesia machines, an orthopaedic theatre table, and autoclaves.
· Improved supply of medical consumables to support uninterrupted clinical services.
· Enhanced radiological services, resulting in reduced downtime of the CT scanner at the Advanced Imaging Centre.
· Improved and reliable water supply, which has strengthened sanitation and infection prevention measures across the hospital.
Dr. Bawah Abdulai disclosed that a number of projects have been completed and are awaiting commissioning, including:
· Installation of a new autoclave at the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).
· Installation of new laundry equipment to improve hospital laundry services.
· Drilling of six boreholes, which are awaiting mechanisation to boost water supply across the facility.
The CEO further highlighted several projects currently underway:
· Construction of the hospital's main entrance.
· Construction of a new cardiology centre with support from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares).
He also announced plans to commence several strategic projects which will further enhance the delivery of quality services in the hospital. These include:
· Installation of a new oxygen plant to strengthen oxygen production and supply.
· Retooling of diagnostic services with modern equipment, including an MRI machine, CT scanner, mammography equipment, and other critical diagnostic devices.
· Rehabilitation and expansion of the hospital's power supply system, including the installation of solar energy infrastructure to improve energy reliability and efficiency.
Reaffirming management's commitment to continuous improvement, Dr. Bawah Abdulai said the hospital would continue investing in infrastructure, medical equipment, and essential support services to enhance healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
Key Management Announcements
Beyond infrastructure and service delivery improvements, the durbar also served as a platform for management to share important policy and administrative updates aimed at improving staff welfare and operational efficiency. Among the key announcements were:
· The automation of the hospital's 50 per cent medical fee waiver scheme for staff and their dependants to improve accessibility and efficiency.
· Plans to install a public address (PA) system across the hospital to strengthen communication and public announcements.
· A proposed policy encouraging staff to limit the use of mobile phones during working hours to designated break periods or after work, with the aim of improving productivity, professionalism, and patient care.
The CEO's presentation was met with applause from staff, many of whom expressed optimism about the hospital's future. The updates renewed confidence, boosted staff morale, and reinforced a shared commitment to supporting the hospital's ongoing transformation and the delivery of quality healthcare services to patients.
